Gwendolyn E. "Gwen" Blackburn

Gwendolyn E. “Gwen” Blackburn, age 88, of Fennimore passed away on Sunday May 12, 2019, at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Society in Fennimore. She was born on Aug. 27, 1930, in Mt. Hope Township Grant Co., WI, the daughter of Roy and Gladys (Merry) Monroe. Gwen was united in marriage to Aubrey Blackburn on June 28, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.

Gwen graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1946 as Valedictorian of her class. After her marriage to Aubrey, she worked various places throughout Fennimore. She waitressed at the Fenway Café, assisted at Blackburn U-Fill and Blackburn Universal, worked as a nurse’s aide at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Society until becoming very involved in Tupperware sales throughout the area. After her retirement, she loved her role as grandma and adored spending time with her grandchildren. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. Gwen and Aubrey also enjoyed going camping and spending their winters in Texas. She stayed very busy sewing, cooking, and baking and will be especially remembered for her apple pies and cookies.

Gwen is survived by her husband Aubrey of Fennimore, five children; Melody (Dennis) Govier of Westby, Nancy (John) Govier of Tucson, AZ, Christine (Roger) Butler of Boscobel, Dave (Christy) Blackburn of Fennimore, Jim (Lou Ann) Blackburn of Mt. Hope, 12 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, sister Virginia (Frank) Miller and brother Harley “Bud” (Alberta) Monroe.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday May 20, 2019 at the Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore with burial to follow in the Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the funeral home on Monday morning.
