Wilfred J. “Willy” Udelhofen

Wilfred J. “Willy” Udelhofen, age 82, of Cassville, died on Wednesday May 31, 2017 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. Willy was born on August 31, 1934 in Cornelia, WI the son of Frank and Mary (Richards) Udelhofen. He married Julaine “Junie” Kowalski on September 4, 1958 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dickeyville.

Willy enlisted in the US Army in 1954. He was stationed in Japan and honorably discharged as a Sargent in 1956. Upon returning home, Willy began working for Kowalski-Kieler as a heavy equipment operator, and soon met his future wife Junie. Kowalski-Kieler opened its first ready-mix plant in 1958 and would continue to grow throughout Southwest Wisconsin over the coming decades. Willy became president of the company in 1980 and maintained that role until his retirement in 2005. Kowalski-Kieler had ready-mix plants in Dickeyville, Lancaster, Fennimore, Dodgeville, Platteville, Highland, Cassville and Blanchardville in addition to two crushing plants and one sand processing plant.

Willy loved hunting, especially the trips out west with his buddies. He enjoyed spending time both playing and working on his hobby farm in Stitzer. He also loved spending time with his family on holidays and on winter getaways in Florida. Willy was a hard working man who led by example. He was truly a gentle giant and a man of few words, but when he spoke everyone stopped to listen.

Willy is survived by his beloved wife Junie of Cassville; five children, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Kelly Udelhofen (Holly Jones) of Stitzer, and their children Zachary, Haylee and Logan Udelhofen and Christopher (Danielle) Bartow and their daughter Adriana Bartow, Kimberly (Robert) Govier of Fennimore, Dena (Shawn) Wood of Cassville and their children Brandon, Blake and Brinley Wood, Ky (Kevin) Ruchti and their children Jacob and Lucas Ruchti and Coco (Torey) Schauff of Belleville and their children Alex and Max Schauff. Willy is also survived by brother and sister-in-laws; Mitz (Roger) Droessler, Betty (Wayne) Kruser and Jim (Charlotte) Kowalski, all of Dickeyville, Donna (Larry) Bernhardt of Cassville, Collette Kowalski-Hallowell of Angora, MN and Colleen (Wayne) Ploessl of Cassville, several nieces and nephews and special hunting buddy Bernie (Anita) Heileman of Dickeyville.

Willy was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Stella (Walter) Timmerman, Merlin (Ruth) Udelhofen, Ralph Udelhofen and Mabel (Bill) Tobin, mother and father in-law Doc and Irene Kowalski and brother-in-law Tom Hallowell.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, June 5, 2017, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dickeyville. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at the church on Monday morning. In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial fund is being established in loving memory of Wilfred J. “Willy” Udelhofen. The Larson Family Funeral Home of Fennimore is assisting the family
