Marvin W. Harms

Marvin W. Harms, age 89, died on Saturday morning Nov. 18, 2017, at Bloomfield Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Dodgeville. He was born on Dec. 19, 1927 on the Steil’s Farm to Wilson and Ida (Anderson) Harms. Marvin was united in marriage to Arlene Leibold on April 19, 1958 at St. Joesph Catholic Church in Dubuque, IA.

Marvin’s early formal education began at the Harms Road one room schoolhouse. After eight years there he attended Cobb High School where he graduated. For much of his life, Marvin farmed with his family in Eden Township. He also thrived on staying busy and worked at the Don Q Inn, Little Rock Hotel and Mini Mountain. For several years, Marvin also sold seed for the Renk Seed Company. He was also a fixture at the Iowa- Grant High School as the custodian and at both of the churches in Cobb. He wore his ring of keys on his hip ever since.

Marvin loved his wife Arlene and together they loved to dance, travel and work the family farms north of Cobb.   Marvin’s love of photography document many family gatherings and occasions. He was often seen wearing multiple cameras around his neck. One of his favorite stories involved meeting Johnny Cash in Dubuque and trying to sell him one of his cameras. Recently Marvin could be seen by neighbors and friends on his golf cart in Cobb. Always busy thinking of and helping others he was never without a warm smile and a friendly wave.

Marvin is survived by his three children; James Harms ( Linda Trecek) of Mt. Horeb, Richard Harms of Maryville, TN and Betty (Dean) Adsit of Eau Claire. Four grandchildren; Kara Harms (Robin Berenson) of San Francisco, CA, Amy Harms (Kyle Li) of Pensacola, FL, Haley Adsit and Noah Adsit both of Eau Claire. Sister Arlene Reed of Viroqua, brother Ralph Harms of Richland Center, cousin Darlene Schmelzer of Madison and special niece Lisa Christianson of Spring Green.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Arlene, daughter Carol, and brother-in-law Richard Reed.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday Nov. 25, 2017 at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montfort with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Friday afternoon Nov. 24, 2017 and Saturday morning 10:00-10:30 at the Soman-Larson Funeral Home in Montfort. In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial fund is being established in loving memory of Marvin W. Harms.
